Self-charging face mask leveraging extricated. 

September 20, 2020. Researchers developed a self-charging triboelectric face mask designed to filter and deactivate airborne viruses. In December 2022, a Hong Kong team developed, using the triboelectric effect from breathing to replenish its charge, allowing for a longer effective lifespan. In February 2023, Hong Kong researchers demonstrated their design could maintain a high filtering performance for up to 60 hours of wear time, a significant improvement over conventional disposable masks. As of July 2025, why are these self-charging masks not yet on the commercial market? A small company in Texas invented a transparent medical-grade plastic face mask designed to form an airtight seal around the user’s face. At the front center of the mask is an opening where a BFE95/Tulle nylon filter media is positioned. The filter is sealed within a casing that ensures it is airtight to the mask body while allowing the filter itself to “float” within the central opening. This configuration enables the filter to physically move backward and forward in response to the wearer’s breathing (inhalation and exhalation). Utilizing the triboelectrification effect, produce a face mask performance superior to that of standard surgical masks and even some N95 respirators. The key benefits of this innovative face mask are stronger electrostatic attraction, increased filtration efficiency, extended lifespan, enhanced breathability, speech clarity, potential for active disinfection or regeneration, and potentially lasting up to 60 hours in some experiments. It has been reported to cost less than four dollars each. The new invention’s name is Super Mask. 

Published scientific studies provide strong evidence supporting the face mask triboelectrification effect. 

There are no standard commercial tests that exist for the triboelectric effect in face mask filters. Bernoulli's principle

Inhaling through a mask with a small, 1-inch front opening, the majority of the air flow will still come through the opening, rather than being pulled in from other small gaps due to Bernoulli's principle. 

. However, the constricted opening will cause a high-velocity, low-pressure jet of air.  

How the air flow works 

  • Inhalation creates a pressure differential. When you inhale, your diaphragm contracts and creates negative pressure inside your lungs, which pulls air into your respiratory system. This negative pressure extends to the inside of the mask, making the pressure inside lower than the atmospheric pressure outside. 
  • Bernoulli's principle and the mask opening. Bernoulli's principle states that as the speed of a fluid increases, its static pressure decreases. As air rushes into the small 1-inch opening, its velocity increases significantly. This creates a low-pressure zone directly at the opening. 
  • Dominant flow path through the main opening. Although the low pressure created by the incoming air jet could theoretically draw in air from other, smaller gaps (a phenomenon known as the Venturi effect), the negative pressure gradient created by your lungs will overwhelmingly pull air through the path of least resistance—the large 1-inch hole. 
  • Minor flow from mask leaks. Any imperfections in the mask's seal around your face would allow some air to leak inward. However, this leakage would be a small percentage of the total air intake because the 1-inch opening is a much larger and less restrictive pathway. The majority of the inhaled volume will travel as a fast-moving jet through the main opening.  

About the SAMGO1 LLC Super Mask 

 The SAMGO1 LLC Super Mask uses a "Dynamic Filter Technology" with an oscillating filter. This design allows the internal filter to move with your breath, which may be more comfortable and efficient. However, this feature does not fundamentally change the fluid dynamics described by Bernoulli's principle. With a fixed 1-inch front opening, the mask still relies on the creation of a pressure differential, and the majority of the air will flow through that opening.

The air velocity through the hole will be high, and the pressure within that stream will be low, according to Bernoulli's principle. The Super Mask has not been tested by NIOSH.
